This is Ben the elephant and he recently surprised staff at the Bumi Hills Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe.

Elephants don't usually walk up to houses and unfortunately in this case it wasn't just so Ben could say a friendly 'hello'.

Nick Milne, manager at the lodge, quickly realised something was wrong but the in-house vet was away for the weekend.

In his place another vet volunteered and flew 200 miles to help the elephant. In the meantime, Ben waited patiently, lingering nearby and drinking water.

When the vet arrived they tranquilised the large elephant and soon found a deep wound in his shoulder which they think came from a poacher's bullet.

They also found two bullet holes in one of his ears - the workers at the lodge believe the courageous elephant survived at least two attempts on his life.

Thankfully after some hard work from the staff, Ben is now healing on the property and wears a tracking device so they can monitor his improvement.
