Could Jennifer Lawrence star as Mystique in a new X-Men standalone film?
If X-Men director Bryan Singer gets his way, a stand-alone Mystique movie starring Jennifer Lawrence could actually become a reality.
Jennifer plays Mystique (aka Raven), the shape-shifting, side-switching mutant in the X-Men franchise, including latest instalment X-Men: Apocalypse, which gives her a central role.
Bryan told Empire magazine: "I think she's right for [a standalone], whether it's Jennifer or not.
"She has this different view of the world: Xavier can get into Cerebro and look at the world but he'd rather just teach classes and see the beauty of mutants and humans co-existing in his mansion in Westchester.
"Along comes Raven with a reality check on the state of the world. It opens up a lot of avenues."
X-Men screenwriter Simon Kinberg put the idea out there two years ago, when he told Entertainment Weekly: "I love what Jen Lawrence has done with Mystique, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there's so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo."
Whether Jennifer Lawrence is keen for the role remains to be seen.
The movie, however, may not have Bryan himself at the helm. He is planning to take a step back form X-Men - though not forever.
He told LA Times: "The reality is, even though I'm very desperate to jump to something completely different, I've spent so many years in this universe and I love this cast and the characters so much, I just don't see myself abandoning them forever.
"Perhaps as a consultant, as a producer, even as a director, I could see myself returning in the future. Just right now, once this one is done, I'd like to do something really different."
