Giant Scottish caterpillar web draws tourists

It's a rare sight - thousands of caterpillars creating a 32 foot long floss-like web in the car park of a shop in Sterling, Scotland.

The insects built the webs to keep predators away and since word spread, the floss-like web has become a tourist attraction and is now cordoned off for viewing.

According to the Daily Record the insects can usually be found gorging on cheery trees or hawthorns and blackthorns.

Local shopper Maureen McLaughlin, told The Sun: "It's incredible, quite a phenomenon."

She added: "I've never seen anything like it before. It just shows you how amazing nature is.

"It's a bit like what your worst nightmare is when you see them all moving around the web, but nature is beautiful. I walk dogs and I have never seen anything like it."

A spokesperson from Wickes, the DIY store where the caterpillars were found, said the company are currently in the process of 'finding out more' about the bizarre situation.
