The Elizabeth Tower, or Big Ben as it is most commonly known, has been named Britain's best landmark in TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice awards.

Topping the list for the UK, the world-famous clock tower is also the eleventh best-rated landmark in Europe and 19th in the world – the first time that a British landmark has ranked among the best-rated on the planet in the TripAdvisor awards.

Big Ben featured alongside the likes of Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat and the Taj Mahal. It beat Mexico's Chichen Itza, Dubai's Burj Khalifa and the Sydney Opera House.

In the UK category, second place went to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the Crown Jewels, the Tower of London, which was followed by Tower Bridge, Edinburgh Castle and the Houses of Parliament.

London is now home to the biggest number of winning landmarks in the UK, boasting six of the top ten in Britain.

Visitors to Big Ben praised the "iconic site" for being "quick and fun to see", as well as being "beautiful and way bigger than you think".

Meanwhile, the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru is this year's number one landmark, rising up from second place last year.

Located at the meeting point between the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon Basin, it stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest.

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City were placed second, third and fourth respectively.
