Deer in the headlights? Kind of...

A deer put its head in a light globe for no apparent reason and had to be rescued by a kind-hearted conservation worker.

Environmental conservation officer Jeff Hull received a call reporting that a deer in Suffolk County, New York, had managed to get its head stuck inside a light globe and had been laying in the woods since the previous night.

During the dramatic rescue, Hull "flung his coat over the globe, bear hugging it with both arms as the deer kicked and struggled to break free", the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation said.

"The deer managed to slip out of the globe and ran off into the woods. ECO Hull was left with a good story and a few bruises but his integrity intact."

The officer has been praised widely for coming to the stricken animal's aid.

But it wasn't long before the puns started...

Jokes about stag parties were bandied around, with one commenter saying: "Hell that must have been some deer party! The deer left with the lamp shade still on his head! How drunk do you have to be to do that?"

Another wittily remarked: "I'm sure the deer must have felt a bit 'light headed' after that ordeal."

The phrase "deer in the headlights" has never hit the nail on the head so well.
