Ted Cruz exited the presidential race with an elbow to his wife's face

Ted Cruz has ended his bid for the Republican US presidential nomination with an awkward elbow to his wife's face.

After losing the Republican vote in Indiana, having only managed to secure 565 delegates to Donald Trump's 1,237, Cruz decided to drop out of the race with a heartfelt speech to his supporters.

"It appears that path has been foreclosed," Cruz told supporters in Indianapolis.

"Together, we left it all on the field of Indiana. We gave it everything we've got, but the voters chose another path, and so, with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."

Following his last words, Cruz turned to hug his dad Rafael who stood behind him, delivering a light punch and a swift elbow to his wife Heidi's face in the process.

The blunder didn't go unnoticed, and soon the jokes were out in force.
