Is this the UK's dodgiest street to eat in?

You might want to pick your venue carefully if you're planning to get a takeaway from one of the many outlets lining Glasgow's Paisley Road West.

Over the last year, no fewer than 17 fast food places along the busy road have been issued with food hygiene warnings. They include Indian, Italian, Chinese and Turkish takeaways, as well as fish and chip shops, a roll shop and a butcher.

"It is a lot. Every customer has the right to expect safe food. They pay money for safe food, food that's clean and made in clean premises," public health expert Hugh Pennington tells the Daily Record.

"In some premises, customers can't see what's going on in the kitchen and there's a strong element of trust that staff are washing their hands when they go to the toilet and that kind of thing."

The 17 takeaways, including the Night Palace, the Blue Sky, Super Chef and the Taste of India, are clustered together in one three-and-a-half-mile stretch of Paisley Road West, one of the main routes out of the city.

Many locals, though, don't seem too worried by the news. "We use them every day and they seem fine. It wouldn't put me off, they look clean enough," says one.

Takeaways, though, can be fraught with danger. We recently reported, for example, on a cockroach-infested chicken takeaway in Liverpool. Even the famous names aren't always to be trusted, with bacteria from poo found recently in the ice served by KFC.

A survey last month found that people see hygiene as the most important factor when eating out. According to hygiene monitoring form Checkit.net, six in ten of us won't eat at a restaurant, takeaway, coffee shop or pub that has a low Food Standards Agency food hygiene rating.

In Wales, takeaways are obliged to show their food hygiene rating on their flyers and menus, although in the rest of the UK there's unfortunately no requirement to do the same. If you're online, though, you can look up the ratings of individual outlets on the Food Standards Agency website, here.
