Dozens of holidaymakers caught in a traffic jam on the M56 chose to abandon their vehicles and walk to nearby Manchester Airport so they could reach their flights in time.

Police officers were forced to close four lanes of the motorway while they attempted to talk down a man from a bridge that crossed the major highway. The incident took place at Junction 4 yesterday, with many drivers already battling through heavy bank holiday traffic.
