Rescuers from Animal Aid Unlimited were called out to a property after strange noises were reported that seemed to be coming from a sewage tank.

They arrived to discover the puppy, which was stuck inside the tank and close to drowning in the sewage.

The poor dog could be heard making gut-wrenching groaning sounds as it struggled to stay afloat in the filthy waters.

The video footage shows one of the brave workers leaning head first into the drain as two others held onto his legs to ensure he didn't fall into the tank.

The dog was then lifted out of the sewer and immediately cleaned and given medical attention.

Just two days later, he had fully recovered, and he has now learned to trust his rescuers and has a home.

Animal Aid Unlimited, which operates in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, says its ultimate goal is 'equality and protection of all animals and a complete end to the use and abuse of animals'.

According to the organisation, it's not uncommon for animals to fall into wells, drains and pits in India because they often don't have any barriers stopping them.
