Jersey better than Capri: Europe's best islands revealed

Jersey has been named the ninth best island in Europe, beating chic Italian isle, Capri.

Its place in the ten best rated European islands in the 2016 Travellers' Choice awards also makes it the number one island in the UK and Channel Isles.

The largest and southernmost of the Channel Islands, Jersey boasts spectacular scenery, unspoiled beaches and an enviable record for sunshine. For those looking to travel there, the average hotel price per night available to book on TripAdvisor is £124.

Travellers to Jersey rate St Brelade's Bay Beach and Jersey War Tunnels among the best things to do. Le Haule Manor is the best rated hotel in Jersey, which holidaymakers praise for its "quaint, traditional style" and "lovely staff who genuinely care".

Meanwhile, romantic Greek island Santorini claimed the top prize for the second year running, followed by Spain's Mallorca in second place.

Madeira was named the third best island in Europe, followed by Crete, Tenerife, Rhodes and Gran Canaria.

In the UK category of best islands, the Isle of Wight came second, while Scotland's Isle of Skye and Anglesey in Wales, were named third and fourth best UK islands respectively.

The world winner was Maui in Hawaii, which is praised for its golden sands, excellent surfing conditions and ethereal bamboo forest. Santorini, Jamaica, Providenciales and Bali followed respectively.

TripAdvisor's annual awards are based on millions of reviews and opinions from travellers across the globe. Winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions on islands worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period, as well as traveller booking interest on the site.

With its distinct bright blue sea, multicoloured coastline and bright white houses, Santorini is just 11 miles long.

Jersey is the biggest of all the Channel Islands which sit between England and France. Although the island is English speaking the area maintains a mix of French and English culture thanks to its position in the Channel.
The island of Capri, just off the Italian Gulf of Naples, is famous for its white cliffs and colourful houses.
