'Important issues' raised over academy plans, says Nicky Morgan

Updated

Critics have raised "important issues" over the Government's plans to force every state school to become an academy, the Education Secretary has said.

Nicky Morgan said other MPs wanted to know details of the conversion process.

She said many were concerned about what would happen to rural primary schools which it has been claimed might have to close under the plan.

The Tory MP for Loughborough told BBC Radio 5 live that the White Paper which includes the plans is "about a lot more" than academy conversions and also focused on standards and finding good teachers.

If the plans become law, all schools, primary and secondary, would need to be academies by 2022.

Two-thirds of secondary schools have already converted but 15,000 schools do not currently have academy status.
