A woman was filmed climbing over a protective fence to recover her hat which fell inside a tiger's pen at Toronto Zoo.

The zoo is investigating the incident after a video was posted on YouTube on Saturday.

In the footage, the woman is seen climbing down the fence and grabbing her hat while the tiger, which is separated by another fence, lunges towards her.

Once she retrieves the hat, the woman hops back over the fence.

A man is then heard shouting: "You're a moron, you're a moron. You're a bad example to everyone else's kids."

As a woman tries to break up the argument, the man says: "She jumped into a tiger cage. Are [you] kidding me?"

Jennifer Tracey, spokesperson for Toronto Zoo, told CBC News that the zoo is asking witnesses to help explain what happened.

"It was very irresponsible of this individual to jump over the boardwalk and [she] could have easily injured herself by exciting the animal in this way," she said. "The situation could have been much worse."

There were no zoo staff present when the incident occurred.
