A newlywed couple's honeymoon became a holiday from hell after arriving at their hotel to discover it was little more than a building site.

Ashley and Ceiran McCann, both 26, paid £3,500 for their 'dream' holiday in Cape Verde - but when they arrived at the Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa on the island of Sal, cranes and diggers made it feel more like a construction site.

And, when they arrived in their room, they turned the taps on to find their water was a hideous bright yellow colour.

Speaking to the Mirror, neonatal nurse Ashley said: "Alarm bells started ringing straight away - the hotel was a building site and the beach was completely deserted.

"What's more, the noise from the diggers and cranes was deafening, there was no way we could relax on that beach."

The pair complained to their tour operator, Thomson Holidays, but were told that their head office had been to assess the noise and it had been concluded that it wasn't a problem.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Ashley said: "We were devastated about the hotel because we'd been looking forward to it so much.

"Builders were coming in and out of the room all the time trying to fix the hot water, but in the end we just had to wash in the cold yellow water.

"Ceiran and I have been loyal customers of Thomson for years and we've always been really happy with the service.

"But this holiday ruined our honeymoon and the way they've handled it afterwards beggars belief."

Ceiran had asked Ashley to marry him on a beach in Cape Verde on another Thomson holiday.

They loved it so much they decided to return to the area for their honeymoon last year.

Things then went from bad to worse when Ceiran came down with food poisoning.

According to The Sun, Ashley said: "It was a disaster from start to finish."

After five days, the couple complained again to Thomson and they were moved to another resort.

The Daily Mail reports that the pair spent six months communicating with Thomson before they were given £232 in compensation.

A Thomson spokesperson told the paper: "We're sorry to hear that Mr and Mrs McCann were unhappy with their holiday accommodation in Cape Verde.

"As we are in discussions with the couple to find a resolution, we're not in a position to comment further at this stage."
