Cardiff followed with 8.37 points and Sheffield, the previous winner, was close behind with 8.36 points (8.62 points in 2015).

The survey asked more than two million hotel guests in the UK, putting Bristol in fourth place, while Edinburgh claimed the fifth spot.

Manchester received 8.01 points and ranked before London. While the capital city came 10th, the guests acknowledged that London's hotel staff increased their quality of service. Consequently, the rating for London went up from 7.73 in 2015 to 7.84 points in 2016.

The last one on the list was Coventry (6.94), where customers were less than satisfied with hotel staff.

When looking at Europe, the most smiles on guests' faces were found in Slovakia (8.76 out of 10 points). Bulgaria and Poland were also able to impress with the value they placed on hospitality.

The study showed a massive increase of popularity for Bulgarian hoteliers, who scored 8.70 points (compared to 8.40 in the previous year) for their home country ranking among the top five, together with Poland, which improved its rating from 8.52 last year to 8.67.

French (7.98 points) and British (7.95 points) hotels did not make the top 20 list, falling behind Sweden (18th), Greece (19th) and Norway (20th).
