Kebabs aren't the sort of thing we normally associate with fine dining. We're far more likely to eat one in the early hours (after consuming a quantity of alcohol) than we are to order one from a posh restaurant. However, if you get the chance to try this particular kebab, it's worth doing so at a reasonable hour - and with a clear head - because you'll want to savour every mouthful of the world's most expensive kebab.

The Royal has been launched by Hazev near Canary Wharf, and costs an eye-watering £925. Onder Sahan, the chef who created it, was recently crowned the best kebab chef in the country - at the British Kebab Awards. He says the dish is an effort to reclaim the reputation of the dish.

He insists that this isn't a crazy price designed to garner attention - it reflects the cost of the quality ingredients used in the dish. These include the notoriously expensive Japanese Wagyu beef, as well as milk-fed lamb and minced goat. The salad is even drizzled with an aged vinegar that costs £180 a bottle. The expense of the ingredients means that the restaurant needs a week's notice if you plan to order it.

Pricey takeaways

It's not the only traditional takeaway dish that has received a posh makeover with an exceptionally high price. The Bombay Brasserie in South Kensington, for example, launched a Samundaru Khazana curry in 2009 for an impressive £2,000. It included crab, white truffle, quails eggs, caviar, sea snails and an entire lobster covered in gold (of course).

For burger fans, meanwhile, there's the world's most expensive burger, created in 2014 by Honky Tonk restaurant in Chelsea - featuring Wagyu beef, venison, lobster, caviar and gold leaf - and priced at £1,100.

And back in 2014, a Canadian chef announced the world's most expensive pizza at $450. It was topped with seafood, including Lobster Thermidor, tiger prawns and caviar.

The question is whether we have really been craving posh versions, or whether we're quite happy with our usual cut-price takeaway. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
