Designers 'to surround Central Park with 1000ft glass' (video)

Central Park is undoubtedly one of the most iconic places in New York City but now two designers want to remodel it.

Yitan Sun and Jianshi Wu, the winners of the eVolo 2016 Skyscraper Competition, have proposed to excavate part of the park and surround it with gigantic glass walls.

The new structure would contain a total floor area of seven square miles and go down to a depth of 100 feet. Meanwhile, the glass walls would stretch 1,000 feet into the sky.

The excavation would reveal mountains of bedrock beneath the surface and adjacent neighbourhoods would be moved inside the new structure.

According to the designers' description on eVolo: "The ambition is to reverse the traditional relationship between landscape and architecture, in a way that every occupiable space has direct connection to the nature..."

"With its highly reflective glass cover on all sides, the landscape inside the new park can reach beyond physical boundaries, creating an illusion of infinity."

The design duo describe their concept as a 'hybrid multi-functional mega structure'.

They believe their system will break 'the traditional perception of large-scale skyscrapers without taking valuable ground area of Manhattan'.

Central Park was first established in New York City in 1857 and it covers a staggering 778 acres in the centre of the city.

The park is a National Historic Landmark and is managed by the Central Park Conservancy.
