British IS fighter killed in Iraq suicide attack named in reports

A British Islamic State (IS) fighter killed in a suicide attack in Iraq has been named in reports.

The militant, pictured in IS propaganda on social media, has been identified by his family in Huddersfield, according to the BBC.

The man, fighting under the name Abu Musa al-Britani, is believed to be Mohammed Rizwan Awan.

The BBC reported the Awan family "knew in their hearts" it was the 27-year-old Yorkshireman.

IS social media accounts confirmed the death, in the al-Anbar province west of Iraqi capital Baghdad, and claimed "nearly 30" people died.

The actual death toll has been disputed, with the Iraqi state claiming the suicide bomber was the only casualty.

The victims are believed to be state security personnel, as well as aligned Sunni forces.

Another jihadi fighter with the exact same name was mortally wounded during a suicide attack in Iraq, in May last year.

Experts confirmed the bomber then - a man of Kosovan-Albanian heritage living in the UK - was a convert to Islam, whereas the more recent terrorist was not.
