The phenomenon, first recorded 100 years ago, is caused by pressure exerted by lake water that dams on one side of the ice barrier.

The glacier is one of Argentina's biggest tourist attractions, and tourists and locals have been flocking to the site, located in the city El Calafate in the Santa Cruz province.
