Would you live in a cemetery?

It's a substantial and attractive building, and at least the neighbours are likely to be quiet - but all the same, buyers aren't flocking to buy this property from Salford Council.

The reason? It's in a cemetery.

As part of a drive to raise money by selling off disused council-owned properties, Salford has put Peel Green Cemetery Lodge on the market. Close to Salford City Reds' stadium and the Trafford Centre, the part two storey and part single storey nineteenth-century building is built of stone with a slate roof.

It's just under 2,000 square feet in size and there's a fair-sized patch of land outside with off-street parking - as well as a now-disused set of public toilets.

The council is offering a 250-year lease, and says the property would make 'an exciting commercial or residential development opportunity' - but that the sale can only go ahead if the plot is successfully deconsecrated.

And several months on, it is yet to be snapped up.

There's no set price for the building, which was used as offices by the council's bereavement services team until last year. The council is believed to be hoping for a commercial buyer - perhaps someone planning to open a florist or cafe.

"The Lodge needs extensive refurbishment and a new lease of life from someone with time and money to do that," deputy city mayor David Lancaster tells the Manchester Evening News.

"We considered all options, including whether it could be a community asset, but it's an unusual property and location and likely only to be of interest to commercial buyers."

Potential buyers have just a couple of weeks to register their interest with a deadline for formal bids at the end of this month.

In fact, cemetery lodges often do sell as houses - Rightmove has shifted several over the last year, mostly at knock-down prices. They tend to be solid and substantial, often with attractive Victorian features.

And at least they tend not to have any graves actually within their grounds, unlike many converted churches.

There's currently a three-bedroom cemetery lodge available for rent in Sedgefield, for just £630 a month. Another, in Birmingham, is being offered as offices.
