A British man forced an Easyjet flight to make an emergency landing in France after he tried to open a plane door mid-air.

The man, in his 30s, reportedly started drinking duty-free alcohol when he boarded, and became agitated, marching up and down the aisle.

He allegedly pushed his girlfriend when she tried to make him sit down, before attempting to open an emergency exit door.

Speaking to The Sun, one witness, Joe Mortell, 26, from Cheltenham, said: "He dragged his feet all the way to the police car."

Another witness said: "He was drinking rum or whisky. Air crew took the bottle off him but it was too late."

The flight, which was flying from Marrakech to London Gatwick, was forced to make an emergency landing at Bordeaux-Merignac airport two hours into the four-hour journey.

French police boarded the plane and dragged the man off to a waiting car.

According to the Mirror, an Easyjet spokesman said: "Such incidents are rare. We take them very seriously and always push for prosecution."

The incident occurred on Monday and caused a 90-minute delay.
