AirBNB has revealed its most popular rental - and it's not the mansion you might expect.

No, the property that gets the highest levels of occupancy of any in the world is a tiny shack in the California woods. First listed on the site around seven years ago, it's barely ever been empty since; last year it was only unoccupied for three nights.

The Mushroom Dome Cabin, near Aptos, was originally built from a kit to a pentagonal floorplan - though it's been expanded a little since - and has a geodesic dome as a roof.

It costs $110 (£77) per night, plus tax and a cleaning fee. Up a ladder, there's a double bed, with a view of the stars through a glassed section of the roof.

There's a futon below, potentially sleeping a third person, along with a tiny kitchen area. Hidden behind a curtain is a small bathroom, containing a composting toilet and shower.

Owner Kitty Mrache is keen to make sure renters don't have any illusions about the property's size.

"The cabin is not as big as it looks in this photo," reads one photo caption, while another adds: "The magic of a wide-angle lens!"

But it's set in ten acres of land, with a large deck facing the redwood forest and only a short walk to the beaches of Monterey Bay. "If you love hummingbirds, bring your camera," advises Mrache, who says that several hundred of the tiny birds visit each year.

"The mushroom dome is a terrific example of some of the more unusual homes that are featured on our site, a spokesperson for AirBNB tells the Guardian.

"Like all of our superhosts, Kitty and Michael are committed to offering extraordinary hospitality, which is of course highly desirable to prospective guests."

While the Mushroom Dome Cabin is AirBNB's most-booked property, it's not the one that guests dream of most.

The property that's been added to the greatest number of AirBNB wish lists is also to be found in the woods - although it's rather less remote. The tiny treehouse is, very unusually, to be found in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia: "an urban retreat like no other," the owners say.
