Exhibitions such as Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at London's Victoria and Albert Museum helped swell the number of visits to UK tourist attractions last year.

Some 124.4 million visits were made to the top sites last year, up 3.2% on 2014, according to the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (Alva).

Scottish attractions saw an increase of 5.5% while London venues experienced a 1.6% rise.

Some 5.9 million people visited the gallery at the edge of Trafalgar Square.

1. British Museum

British MuseumThe British Museum maintained its position as the most popular tourist attraction with 6.8 million visitors.

Outside of London the most popular attraction was the Library of Birmingham while in Scotland, bragging rights went to Edinburgh Castle.
