Cyclist killed following pothole crash

A father-of-three has been killed after falling from his bicycle when he hit a pothole while out riding with friends.

Ralph Brazier, 52, was on a ride with a group from Twickenham Cycling Club in Weybridge, Surrey, on Tuesday night when he apparently hit the "ditch-like" pothole and suffered a cardiac arrest.

The keen cyclist, a technology entrepreneur from Thames Ditton, was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at St Peter's Hospital.

It is reported that locals had previously complained about the hole, but that it wasn't filled by Surrey County Council until the day after Mr Brazier's death.

A spokesperson for the council's highways authority said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time.

"It's important we wait for the conclusion of an investigation which will explore what happened."

Club mate David Marsden told the Evening Standard newspaper: "Everybody is extremely upset and wants to understand what has happened and why.

"He was a well-loved friend of the club, an enthusiastic cyclist and he will be deeply missed. He was such a lovely man.

"He was a strong, safe and competent cyclist. He was an inspiration to the younger guys of what they would love to be like when they got into their fifties."
