Anderson, 25, Squire, 19, and Sloan, 25, had taken a tour with an unauthorised guide at the popular Datanla waterfalls in Lam Dong province.

Sky News reports that the three backpackers were swimming near the waterfall when they were swept up in strong waters and dragged over the precipice.

Their bodies were recovered downstream and taken to Ho Chi Minh City, 100 miles from Dalat.

The unauthorised tour guide, named by local media as 26-year-old Dang Van Sy, is being questioned by police.

Vo Anh Tan, deputy director of the Lam Dong tourist company that manages the Datanla waterfall, told local media that the backpackers' tour had been arranged by a private operator who did not pay for entrance tickets nor use the company's safety equipment.

Speaking to Vietnam's Tuoi Tre newspaper, Tan said: "The incident is beyond our supervision, but we are still trying to help deal with this tragedy".

The Independent reports that Mr Sloan's family said his "death is a very sad loss to us".

They added: "He was a very popular young man, formerly in the Royal Navy, who had many, many friends not just locally but around the world. He lived for life."
