This beautiful photo, taken from an ultrasound scan during pregnancy, shows twin babies holding hands in the womb.

Brittani McIntire is expecting a baby boy and girl - but tragically, doctors have told the her that they don't think the little boy will make it because has a hole in his heart as well as brain problems.

He only weighs 9oz, while the girl weighs around 2lb.

Brittani, from Kansas, USA, says: "His only chance of survival would be heart surgery, but they wouldn't do that because of his brain."

The parents are taking comfort from the fact that the twins bonding before birth are together at the moment - and the photo they now have is invaluable

"We know we have a piece of them together," says their father Ian.

If the baby makes it through the pregnancy, doctors will deliver the twins by Caesarean.

Brittani says of her baby girl: "She's the only one who can actually be there and hold on to him. It's comforting to know that if he does pass, he won't be alone."

Despite the long odds, the couple is still hoping for the best for both of their unborn children.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, Brittani said: "We're still going to trust in God that no matter what, he's been a blessing and if he makes it then it's a huge testimony to what God can do," mom told the station. "And if he doesn't then we have a special angel watching over us."
