Best beaches in the UK 2016 (according to TripAdvisor)

Woolacombe Beach in Devon has been named the best UK beach for the second year in a row in TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards.

Backed by sandy hills and the Woolacombe Downs, the glorious beach boasts a three-mile long stretch of golden sand and rolling, unbroken surf, which makes it the ideal hotspot for surfers. The sheer length of the beach means that there is no shortage of sand to sit down and relax on during the busy summer months.

Despite Devon being home to Britain's number one beach, it was Cornwall that scooped the most awards of any county in the UK. It is home to an impressive seven winning beaches, four of which are in the top ten.

Porthmeor Beach, Porthminster Beach and Porthgwidden Beach, all located in St Ives, took fifth, seventh and 16th place respectively. Newquay's Fistral Beach and Porth Beach come in sixth and 18th respectively, while Perranporth Beach in Perranporth was named eighth best rated in the UK and Crantock Beach in Crantock was placed 19th.

Elsewhere, Wales is home to four winners for 2016: Rhossili Bay in Rhossili, Barafundle Beach in Stackpole, Barmouth Beach in Barmouth and Castle Beach in Tenby, which place fourth, 20th, 23rd and 25th respectively.

Weymouth Pleasure beach

Meanwhile, the world's best beach is Grace Bay in Providenciales, the main island of Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean - and it's not hard to see why. With seven miles of powdery snow-white sand, turquoise water and year-round sunshine, it is a worthy winner.

Second in the world's best beaches category is Baia do Sancho in Fernando de Noronha in Brazil, followed by Playa Paraiso in Cayo Largo, Cuba.
