Driver jailed after mowing down party-goers in Southampton
A group of friends were brutally mown down after an impatient driver lost his temper and floored his BMW's accelerator in a busy street in Southampton.
The shocking moment was captured on CCTV, and shows the scene as driver Mahibur Rahman smashed into seven people, throwing them in multiple directions across the road in Carlton Place.
One party-goer was left unconscious, while a bouncer who tried to stop the driver was left needing life-changing reconstructive surgery.
Rahman then sped off after the incident, calling emergency services to ask whether or not he needed to return to the scene, calling it an accident and attributing it to his foot slipping on to the accelerator pedal.
Rahman was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault, despite denying them.
After jailing Rahman for six years at Southampton Crown Court, Judge Gary Burrel told him: "This was an absolutely horrific incident – you lost your temper, it's as simple as that.
"You deliberately drove into a crowd of innocent young people, where you were bound to cause them injury – you scattered them on collision.
"It was hardly surprising there were gasps from the public gallery. It does take one's breath away to see what you did."
Seven people suffered injuries as a result of the incident, with many expressing that lasting mental damage had been dealt, too.
