According to the Guardian, Swedish media reported that the bridge was closing after it had opened to allow a vessel to sail through. Local media reported that it is believed that warning lamps were flashing and two barriers blocked the road.

The victims, who are all men aged between 19 and 35, are Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe, Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarry.

Local police said divers recovered their bodies from the canal.

Viola Beach travelled to Sweden to perform at the Where's the Music? festival on Friday. The Warrington-based band was due to play a gig in Guildford, Surrey, on Saturday.

A Foreign Office spokesman told the Daily Mail: "We are in contact with local authorities and supporting the families at this very difficult time."
