Lock of Lennon's Hair Set for Auction

Die-hard Beatles fans could own literally be the new owner of a piece of legendary musician John Lennon. A U.S. auction house is preparing to sell what they have authenticated as a lock of the singer's hair.

Heritage Auctions, which sells itself as 'the world's largest collectible auctioneer', will sell the clump of hair on 20 February, in Dallas, Texas.

They have said the lock of hair comes from hairdresser Klaus Baruck, who gave Lennon a trim in 1966 in Germany, just after the release of the famous 'Revolver' album - before he filmed the movie, 'How I Won the War.'

The piece of hair is thought to be about 4 inches long and is estimated to contain hundreds of individual strands.

A statement on the Heritage Auctions website said: "To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest lock of Lennon's hair ever sold at auction. It can be dated to a specific time and location and has been in the collection of the original owner for all these nearly 50 years."

The lock of hair isn't the only piece of John Lennon memorabilia up for sale, the auction lot also includes a signed call sheet for the film.

The lot also includes two clippings from German newspaper Bild with pictures of Baruck cutting Lennon's hair and another of Baruck holding the piece of hair that is to be sold.

The current bid for the item is at $12,000 with a minimum next bid set at $13,000. A reserve amount for the item, if there is any, will be posted on 13 February, one week before the auction ends.
