Coldplay climb towards number one on album charts after Super Bowl show

Updated

Coldplay look set to clinch another number one album following their performance at the Super Bowl.

A Head Full Of Dreams is the band's only studio album not to go to number one, but it currently leads the race to be this week's chart-topper.

Thwarted by Adele's 25 on its original release in December, Coldplay's album has climbed back up the chart - almost 8,000 combined sales ahead of its nearest rival - to take the number one position at this midway stage, according to the Official Charts Company.

If it holds on, A Head Full Of Dreams will give Coldplay their seventh UK number one album, topping off an exciting week, which saw them perform at the 50th Super Bowl half-time show with Beyonce and Bruno Mars.

The British band opened the half-time extravaganza with lead singer Chris Martin kneeling on the field at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, singing the first lines of Yellow before transitioning into Viva La Vida.

Back on the albums chart, David Bowie's hits retrospective Best Of Bowie slips a place to number two, while Elton John is on track for a 31st top 10 album with Wonderful Crazy Night, new at three.

Two non-movers round off the top 5, with Adele's 25 at four and Justin Bieber's Purpose at five.

Over on the singles chart, Danish band Lukas Graham could claim this week's number one with their latest single 7 Years - ousting Zayn Malik's Pillowtalk, which is currently down to number two.

The track 7 Years has already proved a huge success across Europe, hitting number one in Sweden, Austria and the band's homeland.

Completing the top five are Jonas Blue's Fast Car at three, Shawn Mendes' Stitches at four, and Rihanna's Work at five.

Little Mix are looking good to land their eighth top 10 single this week with their Jason Derulo collaboration Secret Love Song, jumping four spots to number seven.

Coldplay's Hymn For The Weekend rockets from 60 to 28 mid-week, but the video for the song has been criticised by some for showing a "stereotypical" image of India, as it features the band being pelted with colour as residents celebrate Holi, the festival of colour.
