A man has shared the moment he captured a great white shark leaping into the air off the coast of Mexico.

Great white sharks in Guadeloupe reportedly do not often breach while hunting like their counterparts in South Africa.

According to Earth Touch News, the clear waters in Mexico don't lend themselves to ambush attacks from below.

So when photographer Gerardo del Villar filmed a young great white shark breaching, it was a special moment.

Del Villar said that when this happens in Guadeloupe, it's normally to shake off parasites or put on a display of dominance.

Marine Conservation Science Institute president Michael Domeier believes that the topography of the ocean floor near Guadalupe may offer an explanation as to why Mexico's sharks rarely breach.

He told GrindTV: "The bottom drops off very steeply at Guadeloupe, while in South Africa the water is very shallow for miles.

"So the seals at Guadeloupe can dive deep as they swim away from the island, using the rocks, etc, for cover as they move away. Seals in South Africa can't go deep and they get nailed by the sharks at the surface."

Guadeloupe is home to one of the world's biggest-known great white sharks, called Deep Blue, who is a whopping 20ft.

It is an island lying 160 miles southwest of the Baja California city of Ensenada.

White sharks arrive in late summer and staying through to early winter, feeding on elephant seals, sea lions, and tuna.
