Duchess of Cornwall to visit Brixton Prison

Updated

The Duchess of Cornwall is to visit Brixton Prison to learn more about its rehabilitation programmes.

Camilla will meet prisoners taking part in a wide range of activities at the south London facility as part of her role with the National Literacy Trust.

She will visit the Books Unlocked reading group as members discuss the Booker Prize-nominated book Pigeon English, with its author, Stephen Kelman.

The reading initiative, funded by the Booker Prize Foundation, gives prisoners the opportunity to read, discuss and own Man Booker Prize-shortlisted titles.

The discussion will form part of the series for National Prison Radio, the world's only national radio station for prisoners, where programmes are produced and presented by prisoners with professional producers.

The Duchess became patron of the National Literacy Trust, a national charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK, in 2010, and has presented the Man Booker Prize for the past three years.

She will also speak to prisoners taking part in Bounce Back workshops, in which they can gain practical skills in painting, decorating and construction.

The visit will be rounded off with a stop at Bad Boys Bakery, set up by Gordon Ramsay in 2012, where prisoners gain bakery skills over 12 weeks, and The Clink restaurant, which aims to reduce reoffending rates by providing opportunities in hospitality.
