A Spanish bullfighter's controversial Instagram post has put him in the arena with child services, not to mention a whole host of angry social media followers.

Francisco Rivera, aka the "Duke of Montoro", is one of Spain's most famous matadors, which presumably means he has to practice a lot.

The bullfighter recently uploaded a photo to Instagram of him practicing his cape work with a live bull while he was holding his baby daughter, Carmen, in his other hand.

The caption on the social media post translates as: "Carmen's debut, she is the fifth generation of my family to fight", ITV reports.

It's this photo that has got people all riled up and he has even been accused of child endangerment - one person has even compared the stunt to the time when Michael Jackson held his baby over a balcony.

Another commentator said: "I've never understood the great stupidity of some people."

Although the comments weren't all negative, the supportive comments weren't enough to stop the Child Protection Agency in Andalucia from investigating the matter.

Rivera responded to the uproar by posting a second photo of himself and his own father when we was a child with the caption: "History repeats itself. The best legacy alive, feeling, purity, honour."

Since the controversy the matador has made his Instagram account private.
