More than 20,000 people have signed a petition demanding that rapper Kanye West is stopped from recording an album of music by David Bowie.

Bowie, who died on January 10 aged 69, has a huge army of fans across the globe after a career spanning five decades.

West is reportedly in the process of recording an album of Bowie's music, with a source telling the Daily Star: "Some are straightforward cover versions with Kanye actually singing. On others he is rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie's music."

A poll on the AOL UK Homepage earlier this week attracted almost 14,500 votes - the results (below) clearly indicating users' feelings about West's reported plan.

The petition, by Peter Piranha on the 38 Degrees website, says: "Stop Kanye West from being allowed to record covers of David Bowie's music."

He says this is important because "David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West".

The petition can be found here.
