'Mysterious figure' spotted at 30,000ft on Easyjet flight

A spooky picture captured by a plane passenger at 30,000ft on an Easyjet flight from Austria to London Gatwick showed a 'mysterious figure' walking on the clouds and what appeared to be its shadow below.

Nick O'Donoghue grabbed his camera when he spotted the weird robot-like 'figure'.

Speaking to MailOnline, he said: "I was flying back from a work ski trip in Austria, I was on the window seat with two work colleges beside me.

"They were talking like crazy and I was gazing out the window, as you do. I could see this figure in the distance in front of us and then as we flew closer this shape appeared."

He said it was in view for about two minutes and to him, looked like the Michelin man.

O'Donoghue later posted the photo online, where it appeared on Reddit.

Users took to the site to comment about the unusual sight, with one writing: "At least it wasn't something..... on the wing."

Another explained the phenomenon: "Two smoke stacks under the low clouds, so two streams of smoke. They connect a bit higher up, due to changes in air pressure or something."

A number of commenters said the figure looked like the Iron Giant.

Another joked: "Don't be silly, it's obviously a cloud monster."

One Reddit user, who claimed to be a pilot, wrote: "It's a factory's exhaust rising up through a low overcast. There must be a low level inversion and the smokestack gets the hot exhaust above the inversion. Beautiful pic! (I've seen this a couple times as a pro pilot)".
