January shouldn't be about deprivation. Of course, a combination of New Year's resolutions and running out of cash tends to mean it is, but it doesn't have to be this way. The best new starts involve balance: exercise and chocolate, sleep and play. And this week we have freebies to help you find a balance without the expense.

Free fitness DVD

New members of Topcashback.co.uk can get a free copy of the new Davina McCall fitness DVD (worth £12.99). All you need to do is sign up, find the offer page, and click through to buy the DVD. We've mentioned deals from the O2 Priority app before. We've also mentioned that there are so many of them that if you're in the market for a pay-as-you go deal, it's worth factoring the freebies into your decision about which network to go with. At the moment, O2 Priority members can get a free 99p cookie from Millies Cookies. The offer runs until the end of the month, but don't hang about, because deals like this tend to be popular and sell out early.

Free main course

Giraffe is offering a free main course (as long as you persuade someone else to buy one at full price). You'll need to register with the restaurant and download your voucher. The deal is valid Monday-Friday and after 5pm on Sunday, and runs until the end of January. There are menu options from burgers and fry ups to quinoa salads - so you can strike the balance that suits you best.

Free travel pillow

Any balance should naturally include plenty of sleep. The users of HotUKdeals.com have pointed out an on-going deal, which will bag you a free travel pillow. Just try out a Tempur mattress in any stockist, and a member of staff will give you a leaflet with a code on it. You can then input the code on the website and get your free pillow.

Free Lego magazine

Of course, for children, January shouldn't be any less fun than the rest of the year, so any free entertainment is a godsend. You can get two years' free membership to the LEGO Club - complete with a magazine stuffed with comics, games, puzzles and new toys. Just sign up on the website, and LEGO will send you an email so you can complete your subscription and get access the LEGO Club website.

Free money (sort of)

We don't normally include everyday cashback in this list, because while cashback sites and credit cards offer some brilliant kickbacks, they are hardly freebies. Occasionally, however, someone offers so much back that it would be remiss not to mention it. American Express runs its version of cashback, where if you spend on the card, you will get a sum credited to your statement - reducing your overall bill. At the moment it is offering two deals worth mentioning. At Monsoon and Accessorize if you spend £50 you'll get £10 back and at Gordon Ramsay if you spend £100 or more you'll get £20 back.
