Going on holiday in 2016 could be far cheaper than it was last year - as long as you choose the right destination. The pound may have sensationally plummeted against the US Dollar, but against other currencies it has risen as much as 55% in the past 12 months. It means that picking the right destination could mean saving a fortune. The question is where you should go.

A study by No 1 Currency has revealed that by far the biggest change in the past 12 months has been the gain in the pound against the Argentinian Peso, which is up 55%. This is followed by the Brazilian real at 47%, the South African rand at 35% and the Colombian peso at 30%.

Many of the countries that have seen the most favourable changes are far flung holiday destinations - often off the beaten track. Brazil may be attracting the crowds in 2016 for the Olympics, but many travellers will see Brazil as being too far out of their comfort zone.

Other countries in the list are major tourist destinations for Brits - including Canada and Australia - but they are so far away that the money people spend on their flights is always going to be the biggest expense, so savings once they get there are a nice benefit, but are not going to tempt people to change their travel plans this year.

Hot destinations

With this in mind, AOL has produced a list of the five destinations that are likely to draw more Brits as a result of the exchange rate.

1. Turkey
The fact that Turkey's neighbours are experiencing such extreme upheaval has not affected life in the resorts, and as a result didn't put Brits off the country in 2015. This year, the fact that the pound has gained 27% against the Turkish lira means a trip to Turkey is likely to be even more affordable - and therefore attractive to many.

2. Poland
The Polish zloty has had a torrid time of things against the pound. In the last 12 months it has fallen 7%, but in the past two years it is down closer to 15% and over five years it has fallen almost 25%. Given the fact that it's an affordable destination anyway, it's no surprise that it is top of the list for many backpackers looking for an affordable break in Europe.

3. Hungary
Hungary has seen the forint fall 5% in the past 12 months, and over the past two years it has fallen 14%. Given that Hungary had a reputation for affordability in the first place, it's easy to see the attractions of destinations like Budapest for those looking for a cheap break. The World Tourism Organisation named Hungary as having had the biggest increase in visitors of any European country in 2015, and this trend is set to continue in 2016.

4. Spain
In the past year, the euro has fallen 5% against the pound - which is approximately the same drop it saw in the previous 12 months. It means that the whole of the Eurozone has become more attractive to British travellers. Spain deserves its place on this list, therefore, because it is the country's favourite holiday destination.

5. Portugal
This is another destinations where travellers can enjoy the effect of the falling euro. The Algarve is the third most popular holiday destination for Brits, and with one of the lowest terror threat levels in Europe, it offers wary travellers a great budget option.

But what do you think? Will your break be a bigger bargain this year, and will the stronger pound tempt you further afield? Let us know in the comments.
