British holidaymakers are missing out on cheap flights as it has been revealed that 86 per cent of us book at the wrong time.

New analysis from global travel search engine Skyscanner has found the best time to book a flight to bag a bargain.

The research found that cautious Brits like to plan ahead and book flights well in advance - almost half of us doing so at least 13 weeks in advance. While this may make for good planning, Skyscanner's data suggests it won't save you money.

So, when is the best time to book a flight? According to the search engine, booking seven weeks in advance of flying is the best way to bag a bargain.

But this also depends on the destination as Barcelona, for example, is best booked eight weeks in advance to give you savings of 14 per cent. Popular long-haul holiday spots should be booked a little in advance. For instance, thrifty travellers can save 9 per cent on the average flight price to New York if you book 18 weeks in advance.

The month you travel can also make a difference as the report shows January is the cheapest month to fly from the UK, followed by November. Unsurprisingly the school summer holiday month of August is by far the most expensive month to travel.
