The former secretary of Durham University's prestigious Union Society has been cleared of raping a student and sexually assaulting another.

Louis Richardson, 21, from Jersey, was cleared of all charges following a trial at Durham Crown Court.

The history student was hugged by his mother outside court moments after the verdicts were read out by the jury foreman.

Asked to comment, he said: "I would rather just let it sink in."
