Motorists in Florida were shocked last week to discover a toddler driving a toy car on a busy highway.

The three-year-old boy, dressed only in a shirt and a nappy, was found 'driving' down the busy highway on his motorised big wheel toy.

US highway 19 in Crystal River is extremely dangerous - but the child's fellow drivers were quick thinking enough to box the boy in so he couldn't travel any further.

According to ABC News law enforcement officers were then notified after a member of the public rang in an emergency 911 call.

A witness described the child as looking 'bewildered' before questioning how the child had even made it on to the highway in the first place.

Citrus Country deputies say the little boy was able to unlock a door in his home by standing on a chair. He then escaped while his father was in the bathroom.

The child was able to make it a quarter of a mile away from home on his big wheel before he was stopped.

Danny Collins, who witnessed the incident, said: "This is horrible. I mean I could not imagine, I really just started thinking about my daughter and couldn't imagine her being out on the highway like that, driving her big wheel."

The child's father showed up on a bicycle at the scene. He was not charged, but the Florida Department for Children and Families is now investigating.
