At this time of year most people in the country can roughly be divided into two groups: those who are virtuously sticking with their resolutions - exercising, dieting and finishing DIY projects - and those who have let the whole thing slide and are eating a cake to cheer themselves up. This week we have freebies for both groups - although sadly no cake.

Free Slimfast

If dieting is on the agenda, and you prefer to use a diet plan, then blogger Skintdad points out that you can get 12 Slimfast shakes for free to get you started. The deal is valid for new Quidco members. You just sign up, use the Quidco link to buy the two six-packs from Superdrug, and Quidco will put £11.98 into your account by the 15th January. You'll need to make your purchase by 11th January though, so don't hang about.

Free tickets

If you've pledged to get stuck into DIY projects more effectively this year, then you can get some free inspiration for a really dramatic change. Grand Designs Live is returning to London's ExCeL in May, and at the moment you can get up to two free weekday tickets - valid between 3rd and 6th May.

Enter the code ENTSFW at the checkout to book, and then print them off at home. Alternatively call the ticket hotline number 0844 854 1348 and quote the discount code when booking. Calls cost 7p per minute plus your network access charge.

Free microchipping

If getting organised is on the agenda, then the users of HotUKdeals.com have spotted that pet owners can get on top of their animal admin for nothing. From 6 April this year it will be compulsory for all dogs in the UK to be microchipped. Dogs Trust is offering to do this for free, and you can find details of the nearest place to you here. Don't forget that even once they have been chipped, the law requires them to continue to wear a collar and tag, with their owner's name, address and telephone number on it.

Free Amazon voucher

How are you going to afford all those self-help and diet books? Well one answer is to get a free Amazon £7 credit. You can get your hands on your credit if you buy an Amazon gift card worth at least £30 by 27 February. You can then spend the card whenever you need to, and spend the credit on those healthy living manuals. This deal is only available to people who haven't bought a gift card in the past two years.

Free drink

If your dry January isn't sticking, then you can take comfort in the fact that at least one drink will be free. Pitcher & Piano is offering a free Appleton Estate Twisted Mojito to all its customers this month. You'll need to sign up to the newsletter, and you'll get an email. Click on the link in the email to get a code, and show this to staff at your local Pitcher & Piano. You can also get 50% off your total food bill for up to 4 people this month if you've fallen off the diet wagon too.
