An elderly widower was trampled on by callous passengers after he collapsed on the London Underground at Waterloo Tube station.

Maurice Grange, 81, was taken ill on the Tube as he travelled to spend Christmas with his daughter.

But he said his fellow passengers simply stepped on and over him after he slumped on an escalator.

Now Maurice, who lost his wife Esme last October after a six-year battle with dementia, is looking for the only people who helped him because he wants to say thank you.

Speaking to the Metro, Maurice said: "It was very busy and the escalator was going quite quickly and the next thing I knew I was on the floor and people were walking all over me.

"It just scooped me up and dragged me down onto the platform. I'm still bruised from the fall – there was shoes and boots coming right onto me.

"I regained consciousness as it came to the end and then this family came up to me. It was a young man and woman with a four-year-old boy and a toddler girl and a push chair I think.

"They helped me to my feet and held me for a while, as I couldn't really stand up. Then they took me to my train and made sure I got on it."

But Maurice said he forgot to ask for contact details and wants to thank the family, who were from Birmingham.

According to ITV News, Maurice added: "I had been thinking about Esme a lot, because it's been really quite hard these last few years and especially since I lost her.

"We'd been married for 51 years.

"I've never had anything like this before, no funny turns, but I was thinking about her just before I fell and I think that might have been it."
