Flooding in Missouri and Illinois has resulted in death and loss of property but there are also stories of hope during these difficult times for the American states.

The Humane Society of Missouri's disaster response team has made it their mission to rescue displaced animals in the St. Louis area, and with their help the very lucky cat seen in the footage above, is going to be alright.

The HSMO team was able to rescue the cat from a flooded trailer in Fenton, Missouri after the animal survived the freezing flood waters by floating on top of its litter box.

The organisation is operating two emergency pet shelters in the area and promises to provide animals with "transportation, safe shelter and lots of TLC".

Now this cat and nearly 60 other animals are safe all thanks to its hard work.

According to the Telegraph this extreme flooding has caused chaos all over the states of Illinois and Missouri.

The Mississippi River was already feeling the effects of heavy rain a few weeks ago when 10 inches of rain fell over the Christmas period.

A hydrologist with the National Weather Service, Steve Buan, told AFP it was extremely unusual, saying: "There's some concern that... with the spring rains, when they inevitably come, we're going to see a return to flooding because we have such a high river to start with."

This comes as yet more heavy rain falls in the UK too, following a Christmas of severe flooding in the north of England and Scotland.

More than 30 flood warnings were issued yesterday for various areas in Scotland.

Meanwhile, the coastal town of Whitby has been almost cut off thanks to the floods. According to the Telegraph the area can only be accessed by 4x4 cars.
