A Jet2 flight travelling from Tenerife to Newcastle Airport had to be diverted to Ireland after a woman became "increasingly aggressive" towards cabin crew.

The plane had to make an unscheduled landing on New Year's Day after the woman, believe to be intoxicated, became abusive.

The Mirror reports that the plane was carrying 161 passengers and six crew members.

The incident meant that passengers were around four hours late when they finally arrived at Newcastle Airport.

According to the Chronicle Live, a Jet2 spokesperson said in a statement: "Flight LS518 from Tenerife to Newcastle diverted to Shannon Airport, Ireland, on Friday night to offload a passenger who was reportedly showing increasingly aggressive behaviour towards our cabin crew.

"The female was handed over to the local police and we will be working closely with the relevant authorities to pursue any necessary action.

"As part of our Onboard Together initiative we have empowered our crew to take whatever action necessary to protect both passengers and themselves from offensive and anti-social behaviour.

"The safety and welfare of our customers and staff is always our number one priority."

The Express reports that Jet2 last year banned 50 travellers for life being abusive or disruptive towards staff and fellow passengers.
