A spokesperson for the Calgary Fire Department said three trucks were sent to the airport to deal with the incident, saying over 20 patients were expected.

The Air Canada flight was carrying 332 passengers and 19 crew members and was expected to land just after 3.15 pm local time on Wednesday.

According to the Mirror, passenger Connie Gelber told the Calgary Herald: "It was frightening. Honestly we didn't know if we were going to live or die."

She added that the girl sitting beside her was thrown "right out of her seat down the aisle" when the turbulence hit.

Three children were among those injured, although it is believed none of the injuries are life-threatening.

According to Sky News, Emergency Medical Services spokesman Stuart Brideaux said those taken to hospital were in a stable condition with neck and back injuries.

The incident is being investigated.
