The ten most viewed properties of the year have been revealed - and range from a £1.9 million Grand Design in South Wales, to a property costing just £40,000. They reveal something surprising about our property aspirations in 2015.

There once was a time when the most viewed properties were either multi-million pound dream homes - usually period properties in incredible grounds with some sort of celebrity past - or they were incredibly cheap properties, which could be snapped up for a song.

It reflected the fact that while online house hunting was partly about finding something sensible in our price bracket, the most viewed properties had their numbers boosted significantly by the many thousands of people who were daydreaming about what they would really like to buy.

This year you can find the ghost of both of these categories. There remains one Grand Design in the list, but this is very much down the more affordable end of the dream properties, and comes in at number five.

Incredibly cheap properties make up a decent chunk of the properties - including one selling for just £40,000. The number one property doubtless owes its place to the fact that there's bags of potential at a reasonable cost.

Our dreams

However, this year, the list is dominated by detached family homes in reasonable condition, just shy of £200,000, with a garage and a drive. They are all around the country - from Wigan to Pontefract and Lanark - but they all very clearly fit the same needs.

No doubt the figures are reflecting a certain number of people searching out sensible family homes to live in. However, you don't make the 'top ten most viewed' list when it's just serious house hunters having a look. What we're seeing here is the impact of the dreamers.

The difference is that nowadays we're not dreaming of unimaginably spectacular properties, or snapping up a property empire at a bargain-basement price. What we really dream of now is being able to afford a perfectly normal family home.
