Johnny Depp has been named the most overpaid actor in Hollywood.

The 'Lone Ranger' star was number two last year, but Adam Sandler, who topped the list for two years in a row, was deemed ineligible since his next four films will be released by Netflix.

It's ironic that Depp should be given the dubious honour just as his career is starting to rebound, having earned rave reviews for Black Mass and returning to the iconic character of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Making it to number two on this year's list is Denzel Washington, followed by Will Ferrell.

Rounding out the top ten are Liam Neeson, Will Smith, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck and Mission Impossible star, Tom Cruise.

It should be noted that this doesn't mean their films have flopped rather that the films make less profit as a result of how much the leads are paid.

Interestingly all of the top overpaid stars are men, compared to the best value actor list where four of the top five spots were taken by women.

Mila Kunis, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Emma Stone are the leading ladies to bagged these top spots.

Forbes compiles the list of most overpaid actors using data from the Celebrity 100 list and Box Office Mojo.

The actors' last three major releases are analysed and estimates of earnings are made.

According to the site, Depp's recent films returned just $1.20 for every $1 that he was paid.

Denzel Washington may have been in second place but the divide between the two is clear when you see that the return on Washington's films were $6.50 for every $1 he earned.
