The Fixer: how to sell your old mobile

Updated

Have you been left out of pocket due to poor service or sharp practice? Do you have a money problem that won't go away?

It can seem impossible to get a fair result when you are battling a financial issue alone. But never fear! The AOL Money Fixer is here to help.

Dear Fixer,
I have just been sent a new mobile phone by my network provider O2, and so I am keen to trade in my old phone.

It's a Samsung Galaxy S4, so I think I should be able to get some money back for it. What is the best way to do this please?

T Potter, Harrogate

Dear Mr Potter,

There are lots of ways to get money for your old smartphone. Your provider O2 offers its own recycling service, and is currently offering £57 for a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500.

All you have to do is go to its O2 Recycle website, click on the "Sell my phone" icon below the appropriate Samsung Galaxy S4 and send your phone to the company by post.

It will then pay you the agreed price within five working days - or deduct the amount from your next bill.

O2 promises to match any legitimate, higher offers for your handset that you find within seven days of placing your order.

But to save yourself the bother of making a claim, why not try a comparison service such as SellMyMobile first?

Its site indicates that you could get £83 for the same handset that is priced at £57 on O2 Recycle, so its worth taking the time to shop around.

SellMyMobile also offers a Best Price Guarantee; should you find a higher price elsewhere, it promises to refund double the difference.

Just remember to delete any personal data and remove the sim card before sending your phone off.
