This photo of an orphaned baby elephant taking a snooze is storming internet, but the story behind the picture is even more special.

It was revealed that the elephant, who has been named Ellie, has been secretly living at the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage in South Africa.

The centre helps care for baby rhinos and protects them from poachers. The day that two-week-old Ellie arrived, so did two sick baby rhinos.

Caretaker Karen Trendler said on Facebook that the tiny elephant was critically ill when it he came to the orphanage but she didn't tell anyone.

She and another caretaker have been looking after Ellie for four months now. Ellie wasn't supposed to survive but Karen said after months of round the clock care and bottles of milk, he's finally stabilised.

She says that after all baby Ellie has been through, he's well deserving of a nice cosy nap.

Karen wrote on Facebook: "Unless you have nursed an elephant calf and especially one that is a tiny milk dependent baby with a large umbilical abscess, naval/joint ill and septicemia, you cannot even begin to imagine the intensity and challenge."

"But he is still with us and finally stabilising.....it has been an intense and challenging time and an emotional roller coaster."

She added: "He is special, his story special and we'll bring it all to you along with all the acknowledgement. Special thanks as he goes from strength to strength."
