His sister Emily Jacobs said alarm bells were ringing when he sent his parents a message on Facebook on Saturday.

He is understood to have accepted a free ride to the largest of the Phi Phi islands from a Thai man on Friday night.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Emily said: "Saturday morning my mum received a message via Facebook from my brother which basically said he can never see us again, that he is sorry he can't see us one last time, that he loved us etc."

His family urged him to make further contact, and their fears were heightened when he did a few hours later, telling his mum that he was with a Thai man who would not allow him to leave.

He gave the family the mobile number of a Cypriot tourist who said Mr Jacobs had asked him for help and wanted to borrow his phone at a restaurant in Ko Phi Phi Don.

He said Mr Jacobs had approached him with no shoes and no bag.

Sky News has also now reported that Mr Jacobs has been found, tweeting:

The Foreign Office had previously said a British national had been reported missing and they were providing assistance to the family.
